International Travel on OPT: Documents and Rules

F-1 students on OPT can travel internationally, but re-entry requires a valid visa stamp, OPT EAD, and I-20 with a current DSO travel signature.

Can You Travel Internationally on OPT?

F-1 students on OPT can travel outside the US. Returning requires specific documents, and missing any one of them can result in denial of boarding or refusal of entry at the port.

Your F-1 status and your F-1 visa stamp are different things. Status is your legal standing in the US immigration system. The visa stamp in your passport is what allows you to board a flight to the US and request entry at the port. If your stamp has expired, you must obtain a new one at a US embassy or consulate before returning, with limited exceptions for travel from Canada or Mexico.

Required Documents for Re-entry

Verify that you have all four of the following before you travel:

  • A valid passport, not expiring before your planned return date
  • A valid F-1 visa stamp in your passport (not expired; see below for what to do if your stamp has expired)
  • A valid OPT EAD card (not expired)
  • Your I-20 with a current travel signature from your DSO (dated within 12 months of your return)

Automatic revalidation may allow re-entry with an expired F-1 stamp if you are returning only from Canada or Mexico and did not visit any other country. This exception does not apply to travel elsewhere.

The DSO Travel Signature

The travel signature on your I-20 is a dated endorsement from your DSO confirming that you are enrolled and in good standing. Airlines and CBP officers use it to verify your student status when you return.

The signature must have been dated within 12 months of your re-entry date. A signature that is older than 12 months at the time of re-entry is invalid.

Before any international trip, check the date on your I-20 travel signature. If it will be more than 12 months old when you return, contact your DSO to get an updated signature before you leave.

Traveling Without a Job

You can travel internationally during your OPT period even if you are currently unemployed. There is no rule that requires you to be employed to leave the US.

Unemployment days continue to accrue while you are abroad, the same as if you were in the US without a job. A two-week trip while unemployed counts as 14 unemployment days toward your limit.

Track your remaining unemployment days before booking travel. A long trip while unemployed can consume a significant portion of your limit.

Traveling with an Expired F-1 Visa Stamp

If your F-1 visa stamp has expired, you cannot use it to re-enter the US after traveling abroad, except in limited cases under automatic revalidation when traveling only between the US, Canada, and Mexico. You must apply for a new stamp at a US embassy or consulate before returning.

For students from India and China in particular, consulate wait times for a new F-1 visa can run several months. Traveling while your stamp is expired or close to expiring carries a real risk that you cannot return before your OPT ends.

Check your visa stamp expiration date before booking any international trip. If the stamp will expire before your return or has already expired, consult your DSO and consider delaying travel until you have a valid stamp.

Traveling During a Pending STEM OPT Application

If you filed a STEM OPT extension before your current OPT EAD expired, you are in the 180-day automatic extension period while USCIS processes the application. Travel is allowed during this period, but re-entry requires additional documentation.

To re-enter during the 180-day extension period, carry your expired OPT EAD, your I-20 with the STEM OPT recommendation, and the USCIS receipt notice for your pending I-765. Verify current USCIS travel guidance before your trip, as rules may change.

Ask your DSO to confirm the current travel requirements before leaving the US with a pending STEM OPT application. Your DSO can also update the travel signature on your I-20 before you depart.
